Grenola Now and Then
Even though the museum is closed for the winter, there are still interesting things that happen there. We recently heard from Dr. Sherry Ulmer who lives in Coolidge, Arizona. Sherry has been a member of the Grenola Historical Society since a visit to Grenola in the early 1990’s and has been generous in her support of the museum. Sherry lived here in 1950-51. Her father, Milton “Bud” Hooper, was employed by the Grenola High School . Mr. Hooper taught Industrial Arts Classes in the new building and also coached High School boy’s football and basketball. The football team played against Moline, Elk City, Sedan, Peru, Howard and Cedar Vale. Seniors who played on the team were Jack Havner, Roy Berry, Darrell Burdette, Carlton Hopper, Jarel Crawford, C.A. Boswell, Lowell French, Raymond Sweet, Charles Mattocks, Merlyn Logsdon and Jonnie Pinegar. Starters on the basketball team were: John Pinegar, Guard, Jarel Crawford, Center, Beyl Hazlett, Forward, Merlyn Logsdon, Guard and Wayne Potter, Forward. In addition to the schools listed above, they played teams in the “western league” including Burden, Cambridge, and Dexter.
Coach Hooper’s daughter Sherry was in first grade that year. Among her classmates were: Peggy Logsdon Wolfe, Jack Perrigo, Jimmy Harrington, Billy Hull, Carolyn Kessinger Eastman, and Dale Steward. Leona Kinder was their teacher.
Ray McKinney was superintendent in 1951 and taught mathematics. Paul Beckner was principal and seventh and eighth grade teacher. If you have memories of Coach Hooper and would like to share them with his daughter, please contact the museum and we will help you get in contact with her.
Next week, we'll share more information about Paul and Ruth Beckner and Ray McKinney. If you have memories to share, please let me know.
