Grenola is located in southwestern Elk County just south of US 160 . The town is nestled in the valley of the Big Caney river.  The dirt road down this valley from Grenola to Cedar Vale is beautiful in spots; get a good map first.  Downtown has a nice wide brick main street with playground equipment and horseshoe lanes in a small park.

When you get down to Grenola, check out Freedom Park Recreation Area just west of the gazebo. This was built with donated funds and volunteer labor. It is a large court for tennis, basketball, shuffleboard, skating, etc. A stone marker commemorates Grenola men lost while fighting for our country during time of war. This has all been completed during 2002.

A manufacturer of airplane parts started a factory in the old school during 1996 so the future looks brighter!

Grenola Now and Then

Even though the museum is closed for the winter, there are still interesting things that happen there.  We recently heard from Dr. Sherry Ulmer who lives in Coolidge, Arizona. Sherry has been a member of the Grenola Historical Society since a visit to Grenola in the early 1990’s and has been generous in her support of the museum.    Sherry lived here in 1950-51.  Her father, Milton “Bud” Hooper, was employed by the Grenola High School .  Mr. Hooper taught Industrial Arts Classes in the new building and also coached High School boy’s football and basketball.  The football team played against Moline, Elk City, Sedan, Peru, Howard and Cedar Vale.  Seniors who played on the team were Jack Havner, Roy Berry, Darrell Burdette, Carlton Hopper, Jarel Crawford, C.A. Boswell, Lowell French, Raymond Sweet, Charles Mattocks, Merlyn Logsdon and Jonnie Pinegar.   Starters on the basketball team were: John Pinegar, Guard, Jarel Crawford, Center, Beyl Hazlett, Forward, Merlyn Logsdon, Guard and Wayne Potter, Forward. In addition to the schools listed above, they played teams in the “western league” including Burden, Cambridge, and Dexter.
Coach Hooper’s  daughter Sherry was in first grade that year.  Among her classmates were: Peggy Logsdon Wolfe, Jack Perrigo, Jimmy Harrington, Billy Hull, Carolyn Kessinger Eastman, and Dale Steward.  Leona Kinder was their teacher.
Ray McKinney was superintendent in 1951 and taught mathematics.   Paul Beckner was principal and seventh and eighth grade teacher.   If you have memories of Coach Hooper and would like to share them with his daughter, please contact the museum and we will help you get in contact with her.
Next week, we'll share more information about Paul and Ruth Beckner and Ray McKinney. If you have memories to share, please let me know.

.          Grenola Gossip
Joyce Hull underwent triple bypass surgery in St. Francis Hospital in Wichita on Wednesday,  She feels better already and is expected to be in the hospital another week.  She on the list for a kidney transplant hopefully within the next few months.  Her daughter, Tammy, has completed tests so that she can be a donor.  You may send a card to room  number 6049, St Francis hospital
Jim Carmichael continues to gain strength and test results are good.  He was fortunate to have a winning ticket in the Kansas Lottery.  His daughter, Cristen,  took him to Topeka  on Thursday to collect his winnings totaling $2,000 dollars.  The trip through the fog was long and exhausting,  but he continues to recover  at his daughter’s home.
Richard Dory was transported by the Elk County ambulance to a hospital on Sunday afternoon with heart attack symptoms
Charlene Todd will enter the hospital in Wichita this week, where she is scheduled to undergo back surgery. Please keep all the above in your prayers.
As in most communities people in Grenola have some direct contacts in Haiti.  Both churches have missionaries there and are involved in sending aide.  Kenny and Susie Teague and their daughter, Wendy Law have made Volunteer in Mission trips to Haiti.  Such devastation calls for both prayer and action.
Another person who went to Haiti on a mission trip was Jerry Denton.  Jerry has been a visitor in the home of Kenny and Susie Teague this past month.  After catching up with news of friends, he left for Texas where he hopes to find employment.
There were few places to park on Main street on Saturday as some fifty volunteer firemen gathered for a training session on preparing a landing pad for the Eagle Med, formerly known as the Life Watch helicopter.
